Zombies Ate My Neighbors is an action-packed monster-mashing shoot-em-up that has slithered out of the SNES and into the Genesis. One or two players fight Zombies and other famous movie monsters that have overrun 48 lengthy labyrinthine levels and seven hidden bonus levels!

Tongue's Horror Show

As in the low-budget horror flicks to which this game pays tribute, the story line is simple and sinister. Dr. Tongue has brought a bunch of B-movie monsters back to life. Now you must get them before they eat you, and your neighbors.

Zeke and Julie, equipped with a variety of weapons and power-ups, go on a quest to rescue their neighbors from monsters often seen in horror movies. Numerous elements and aspects of horror movies are referenced throughout the game.

ProTip: If a Blob slimes you, you're damaged but temporarily invincible.

On each level, you have to use your head (if you don't lose it first). You must save at least one potential victim, such as a Cheerleader, a Baby, or a Backyard Barbecuer, or the game's over. You start with 10 victims per level, but that per-level total drops when a monster eats a victim.

Bazookas can blow through cracks in walls, bust through weak spots in hedges, and knock down doors.

The monster-whacking weapons are imaginative. Your standard sidearm is an Uzi Water Gun. Additional creature-beaters include Tomatoes, Soda Six-Packs, and Crosses. The game even supports Sega's six-button controller, which makes cycling through weapons a breeze. However, the regular Genesis control pad can make you stumble as you try to switch weapons at critical moments.

  • Clown Decoys are best against Chain Saw Maniacs.
  • Save life-restoring First Aid Kits until you absolutely need them.
  • Silverware and Plates destroy Mummies.

When you're in a jam, try to find Potions. You can score temporary invincibility as the 'Ghost Kid,' or become a teenage werewolf.

Monster Sights and Sounds

Zombies features dynamite graphics. Gillmen, Pod People, Chain Saw Maniacs, Werewolves, Mummies, and Flying Saucermen ought to dredge up major monster-movie memories.

Zombies' cool sounds will give you the creeps. The undead babble incoherently, werewolves howl ferociously, and your neighbors cut loose horrific screams.

You use a great-looking 3/4 overhead view to run and gun through the beasts. The game's crisp controls enable you to weave through the monstrous hordes with great open-field moves. You can even pull football moves, like cutbacks and body fakes.

    Level 14

On level 14, go as far right as possible and find the hidden passage on the wall. Go through and you will find a shotgun.

If you have a bazooka cannon, use it on the bushes near the top of the area to find a bonus level. Note: You must have all 10 victims at the time. You must save all 10 cheerleaders without any dying to automatically be sent to a bonus level after the level is over.

At the very end of the level is a Giant Spider. You normally must defeat it, but it will take almost everything you have. It is best just to pass it by with a level skip password. Note: If you do intend of fighting it, use the weed wacker to cut through the webs that it makes.
