A few days ago I was looking at random images on my PC when I remembered I had terminated Outlook and needed to open the email client again. I started the program, waited until it booted up and then I immediately minimized as I went about my business. As soon as that happened, I thought about how pointless it is to always minimize Outlook after I boot it up for the first time of the day which is how I remembered that any Windows program can start minimized as long as you set the appropriate options.

Start any program in Windows minimized

The setting that controls whether a window starts minimized or not is located in the Properties window of all shortcuts in your operating system. What this means is that you will need to either find or create a shortcut for the program you are trying to run minimized. The good news is that most of the items on your desktop should be shortcuts and you can easily check by the shortcut arrow.

To create a shortcut, right-click on any .exe file and select the “Create shortcut” option. Alternatively, right-click on the file and select the “Send To > Desktop” option to automatically create a shortcut on your desktop. Once you have the shortcut ready, right-click on it and select Properties. By default you should be in the “Shortcut” tab but double-check to make sure. When you are there, click on the “Run” dropdown menu and change the default setting of “Normal window” to “Minimized”. Click on OK to close the Properties window and save your settings.

You can pin the shortcut in your Start menu and taskbar or even assign a keyboard shortcut to it for easier access. Do note that you need to keep the shortcut file in the same location, especially if you attach it in other areas of your PC as well.
